I have an internship at AJC this summer and I've found that when people (usually the young staff/other interns) say "tikkun olam" here, they really mean "social justice" or "human rights" and they identify it as the most important Jewish task and as what they think should be Jewish organizations' central mission. I think this kind of work is important especially considering the history of the world's treatment of Jews (I believe everyone understands what I'm talking about, but if not you can download lots of info by http://rapid4me.com SE); but when it's about everyone else only and not about Jews, I stop seeing why it's specifically Jewish. "Tikkun olam" does not actually mean "social justice."
